Ask HN: Are you using a Public Key for your communications?

This is a question mostly driven by curiosity (of course some cryptography 101 never hurts..). One Prof. in my University is using a Public Key for his professional contacts and I was wondering if you consider something like that an overkill or something that could be used broadly?

Just to be clear once more this is a curiosity question.
