Ask HN: Are there any good discussion forums left?

I really miss the "early internet" discussion forums, where likeminded people could have decent discussions. The closest thing is probably HN now, but it's limited by the format.

Are there decent discussion forums out there? I'd even be willing to pay for membership potentially.
