Text Hates You (2019)

  • Busted Kerning Almost Everywhere.

Maybe it is different on a Mac, but on Windows automatic kerning is busted on everything from Powerpoint to Adobe Illustrator.

I've noticed that serifed fonts have gone out of style and part of the reason is that serifs look like meaningless junk unless the spacing of the characters is right. I was struggling with this and had my epiphany when I was reading a book that was set in "Palatino" which had beautiful curved serifs on the "r" that practically made love to the curves on the "s" and "e".

Then I looked at the various "Palatino" fonts on my computer and found that the shape of the serifs didn't work like that at all, even when I kerned manually.

But I did perfect manual kerning with Powerpoint and now I set signs in serifed fonts that I'm not ashamed of.
