“No Sex for You”: Life in the metaverse will be tacky, prudish, and dull
> It’s frankly sad that Zuckerberg’s vision of the metaverse is nothing more than the dreamworld of a selfish Peter Pan with a god complex
Never really thought of it this way, but it explains so much
Extraordinarily good writing on a topic which makes me shudder, but probably needs to be talked about. Good, humorous, thought provoking. TIL about "TTP" in game design.
> His vision of the future has no sharp edges, no dark places, no erotic frisson.
This feels a bit lazy. I don't disagree, but can you name any large scale dominant media/communications organisation that does? In today's society, the largest of these organisations requires private investment and political favour - neither of these is compatible with the moral risk of associating with sharp edges, especially erotic ones.
The other side of this is that if Zuckerberg was some kind of libertine visionary, there would be outrage about dystopian privacy issues. To use the author's example, do holodecks have a solid data protection policy?
There will be no such thing as life in the meta verse. This is just a fantasy
Nailed it.
You have to consider what kind of pressure Zuckerberg is under as he builds the Metaverse. His employees and early users are mostly left-wing activist types, who are intensely prudish when it comes to sex. In Zuckerberg's circles, the most common complaint you hear is that the Metaverse lacks enough features to prevent women from being virtually groped. Considering how sterile Horizon Worlds is now, I can only imagine the feedback he would be getting if he allowed the same kind of erotic content as VR Chat.
