The Incomprehensible Luxury of Ice Cream
Just a reminder: for millions and millions of people, ice cream is a absolutely luxury item. Not as in, occasionally I can splurge on a pint Hagen-Dazs. Or the sad, we can really only afford ice cream sandwiches. Or the heartbreaking, we can only afford essentials. But the almost incomprehensible, we’d don’t have any refrigeration at home nor does the local shopping center but, if by some miracle we have extra money, we can ride the bus for a half hour to the next town over and spend a solid day’s wages on a quart of ice cream, the container from which we will save and bring home to store sugar. And the interval between these heavenly tastes of ice cream will be counted in years. I know people who get a new car more often than these people taste ice cream.
