Technically what we normally call grains (e.g. wheat, corn, rice) are all members of the grass family. The reason why grasses are extremely common around the world it that they are pretty resilient to being eaten or mowed. Meadows consist of perennial grasses. In agriculture meadows are harvested are harvested multiple times.

There should be more research into perennial grains.
