Ask HN: Has Hacker News lost interest in crypto?
I rarely see any posts on crypto here. What happened?
Cryptocurrency and blockchain related posts get flagged quickly because the signal-to-noise ratio is low (some would argue it's zero).
There uses to be lots of posts with interesting-sounding claims that didn't hold up under scrutiny from actual CS experts, and I think HN got sick of that.
Then you have the pump-and-dump astroturfers that try to hype up certain coins, and those were always flagged immediately.
So long story short: any good actors in that space have been drowned out by the bad actors and idiots.
It's due to the current cryptocurrency hype cycle and its volatility. When BTC pumps, crypto posts come in. When BTC dumps it is followed by the panic posts. If nothing happens, then you get no posts.
Funny enough, you may also encounter strange posts like this one [0] which tells Coinbase to list a meme-coin because it pumped straight into the 3rd market cap in days. Despite listing, the coin dumped from its ATH.
The user was willing to bet $10k that the meme-coin will reach $1 by the end of August. 'I'd actually be willing to bet 10k USD with you that by end of August Doge will still be over $1.00.' [0]
As of September 2021, it is now $0.24. So where's that $10k then?
This is what euphoria does. Don't be like them and just ignore the hype and do your own research.
Cryptography will always be important in computer science
"Cryptocurrency" as a subject went full scam, then it went mainstream.
Actually the rise of interest also helped the rise in several other forums for discussing the subject, which i assume took over a lot of the chatter on that and related topics.
This is what being priced to perfection does to an industry.
Like it or not people are out to make money. When they feel something is priced for perfection they see no upside
