The way I would read that is they wanted to hire someone in at the earlier stages of their career rather than more experienced. It can be important to have a balance of seniority in a team.

My experience with seeing hiring at a few places is that luck and timing are more of a factor than anyone is willing to admit, so I suspect that you could do an N=1 experiment with any variation of resumes you wanted and have a decent chance of “proving” your hypothesis.

Well, once society actually has equality of opportunity, we can get rid of the bandaid laws and incentives that aim to counteract systemic injustice.

Until then, there are going to be seemingly unfair things like this that happen.

Just realize that for every instance of something like this, there is a trans person who gets beat up, or a black person who gets shot.
