Ask HN: Do you bring your own keyboard/mouse to work?
I think COVID-19 made me germophobe.
Do you bring it and why, or why not?
I ended up bringing most of my own equipment to any job that I have worked over the last decade or so, except for the computer/laptop itself.
I typically want better equipment than the employer is prepared to pay for or otherwise arrange for, and since I already have a lot of personal equipment anyway for home use, I just bring in some of that for work use.
Keyboards, trackpads, monitors, Ethernet switches, docking station, etc….
The alternative is that I bring the work computer/laptop home (e.g., Corona), and plug it into all the gear I already have here.
I have recently gotten what should be a really good KVM switch, so that I can hook up four computers at once to the same keyboard, trackpad, and monitors, and then just switch back and forth between them as I like. But I haven’t tested it yet.
I brought my mouse (logitech m500) because all other mice are just no comparison. Then I asked my boss and he got one for me to use in the workplace.
I've also brought my own keyboard sometimes, because the keyboards they have there are all just... so bad. It's a big clunky thing however so I've only done it 2-3 times. I've recently ordered my first mechanical keyboard, tenkeyless, so that should be more portable. I'll stay on top of whether I'm making too much noise, though.
I've brought peripherals in the past. Not because of germs, but just because I preferred my own equipment and my studio did not offer trackballs as a standard equipment option.

I brought it to jobs where the provided keyboard was a standard membrane. Can't work without a nice mechanical one.
