Ask HN: What do you think of the expression “military aged male”?
Considering the current Russia/Ukraine conflict, and the wartime travel restrictions for men, it feels relevant to ask this question to a wider audience, regardless of whether they are pro anyone, neutral, or feel mostly clueless about the war.
Is "military aged male" a morally legitimate phrase, to be used without further criticism, or should the expression have the same negative connotations as the various types of social repression against women?
When the missiles start flying, equality doesn’t seem so important anymore.
I think it's fine. If anything, expecting or requiring men but not women to fight is "social repression" against men, but I doubt that a large fraction of Ukrainians think it's wrong to have different expectations for men and women in wartime.
