The Fight to Start High School After 8 A.M

  • As a teenager I wanted, demanded this. I wanted to be up late (2 to 3AM) for a variety of reasons (none to do with homework), and waking up early was absolute torture to me at the time. I did other jobs in the subsequent decades where I felt the same. It wasn't until recently that I realized it had nothing to do with the 24-hour clock, and everything to do with temperature, connectivity/socialization, and internal timing; I can't sleep if it's hot during the day, I want to socialize with others across the globe when they're available and when I have no other distractions, and I personally seem to run on a roughly 30-hour cycle (20 up 10 down is ideal for me). I am well aware of all the sleep hygiene concepts of light -- blue and otherwise -- and diet and so on, have tried the medical regimens both naturopathic and academically accepted, and have done many sleep studies to ensure it isn't an apnea/REM issue. I'm just picky and different. I believe we all are.

  • I personally found peak neuroplasticity at the 4am mark and then sustained flow state at 8am that work wonders for me
