Ask HN: Anyone actually seeing wage increases in tech due to inflation?
A lot of the labor inflation is in markets affected by the retirements of the older generation, and Tech is famously young.
There's also labor inflation in markets suffering drain to ones where demand is growing (healthcare etc), but I don't imagine a lot of them are clamoring to bring in software engineers to fill gaps cause we're so specialized.
I think Tech is a little isolated on these fronts from the pressures, and with the rise in rates the amount of investment in the area is likely down leading to less jobs and more free engineers, driving down real wages after adjusting for inflation.
I'm open to being very wrong (hope so) but my expectations are low. I expect a raise just not 8.whatever_inflation_is.
Good time to be a trades person though!
There are going to be more engineers around due to layoffs, so I wouldn’t expect inflation to be baked into a raise. In good times or bad, I’ve found the best way to negotiate a raise is find a new employer who is willing to pay you what you think you are worth. Get an offer and take it to your current manager.
No. I asked for a cost of living adjustment and was turned down.
My raise this year matched inflation, back when inflation was like 5%. They knew it was going to go higher... give the raise early and win later.
Minimum wages will get a raise soon in some countries. In theory when this happens, the rest get a raise. Not automatically, but some people suddenly stars earning minimum wages and they either quit/switch jobs to get a better play or get more compensation from union agreements.
It will happen
When inflation hit 10% in the UK last month my employer brought forward the annual January pay increase. We all got a 5% bump. Last year it was 1%.
Edit: I work in the education sector. Our dev team has 4 people in a company of ~250. It’s not really “tech”
No, there's been significant inflation and employers are playing hard ball like we can absorb the cost. Its just crazy stupid.
Maybe in management. Man, I need to change jobs.
Our company's most recent round of raises were below inflation on the year
My review will be in April. I feel it might happen then very easily. So far nothing
No. Code monkeys only exist to be exploited.
