IKEA issues cease and desist against indie developer

  • The game is based on SCP-3008, the infinite IKEA store

    > SCP-3008-1 is a space resembling the inside of an IKEA furniture store, extending far beyond the limits of what could physically be contained within the dimensions of the retail unit.

  • Beautiful. The Streisand effect will hopefully cause this game to become even more popular.

I just learned that this game exists, and went on to back it immediately.

  • This seems to very clearly fall under the umbrella of fair use for purposes of parody. I hope some entity steps up and offers them pro-bono legal services.

  • If these lawyers wanted to go after the devs the only leg they could possibly stand on under US law would be trademark tarnishment[1].

In any case it could possibly be defended as parody, but only if the fact that the developer didn't use the IKEA name doesn't end the lawsuit sooner - which however would make it a really obvious parody.

  • Oh dear, what is IKEA trying to hide....
