I can't believe we're still at the Messiah/Antichrist stage of crypto.

Crypto is a technology. Like all tech it can be used for good or bad purposes. But it itself is neither good nor bad.

Crypto will not cure cancer or make everyone rich. But it also have uses beyond crime and "gambling" (wait until he discovers casinos are a thing).

I wish Diehl would grapple with these points instead of just refusing to acknowledge them and attacking straw men.

It's simpler than than that. It (the ecosystem that's sprung up, not Merkle tries and whatnot) is an end run around modern securities laws. That's the only reason it's so popular (and provides the market depth that's needed to use is for crime etc)
