This is exactly what I do when I'm solving crossword puzzles. I run through the alphabet for each unknown letter in the answer. Doesn't always work, but it works often enough to make it worthwhile.

Unfortunately, I've tried the same trick to remember forgotten names, but it turns out I have trouble thinking of enough names for each alphabet letter, and especially when they have an unusual name, it doesn't really help.
