I think this author has a problem writing hooks (but doesn't know it?)

To the point of the rest of the piece, they do a good job outlining the relationship but don't want to go the extra mile and provide real examples. It's like they're egging on your imagination to provide all sorts of modern case studies, but even among America's most liberal candidates I'm not sure if I see it.

On the contrary, I think liberal leaders are extremely self-conscious of authoritarian image. The biggest socialist disasters a-la Pol Pot happened because of authoritarian policy that superseded logic. The political science crowd has researched this for decades and is well aware of it's looming specter in the background. The left, by-and-large, is more aware of these optics in America than the right is. Whether or not they intend to attempt the same tone-deaf leadership varies on a case-by-case basis, but that goes for all candidates. The nature of liberal change responding to populist opinion isn't authoritarian but expressly democratic. The only authoritarian policy is to obstruct change and attempt to divert or prevent the due process of democracy.

Here, I'll call it like it is. This is pretty clearly a right-wing fluff-piece covering up for the conservative frontman claiming, and I quote, “Get out and vote just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years it will be fixed. It’ll be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians,” verbatim at a rally. I give the author a 4/5 stars on political theory and a 2/5 on execution.

    > We’ve tacitly raised a generation of liberals who think that it’s normal for Disney to fire actress Gina Carano for having a political opinion that some people don’t like, and yet also think they aren’t authoritarian for doing so.

Is that apathy towards government, or apathy towards business? It's unclear who the "they" is that's being authoritarian, and I think that kinda says everything you need to know about this article. Is "The Left" in the room with you, right now?
