"religion is the opium of the masses" (I cannot remember who said it). It is not damning per se: what it says is that people who dislike thinking will go to the simplest cure for their existential woes. For me, religion and belief are not necessarily the same. I have an agnostic view to the concept of god, and a complete dislike of Religions (as organisations). I prefer to view my life as guided by morality (which is christian due to upbringing). As to "hope" and "salvation": these are in my hands alone.
