Ask HN: How does Dremel work?

I recently stumbled upon Google's Dremel whitepaper.[1] I'm trying to understand how it performs so well. The paper goes over how it stores data in columnar format, but I'm missing the jump from how that translates into quick queries. Would appreciate an explanation , thanks!
